What’s the Big Deal?

While not new in concept, FBA Returnless Resolutions is a new official opt-in program from Amazon.

The supposed benefit of the program is that it allows sellers to offer refunds or replacements without requiring customers to return the product. This change could reduce the burden of return logistics, particularly for lower-cost items where the expense of processing a return might outweigh the product's value. However, it raises the question of how this could affect overall return management and whether it truly benefits sellers in the long run.

How Does it Work?

Amazon offers two main options for setting up returnless resolutions:

  1. By Criteria: Sellers can establish specific conditions under which returnless resolutions apply. For example:
    • Item Value: This option targets lower-cost items, potentially reducing the need for returns that are more expensive to process than they’re worth.
    • Product Category: Certain categories, such as makeup, consumables, and small electronics or accessories, might be well-suited to this approach.
    • Return Reason: Situations where the product is slightly damaged or has minor defects could qualify, eliminating the need for a return.
  2. By SKU: Sellers can designate specific products for returnless resolutions, allowing for targeted application of this policy. This flexibility could be beneficial, but it also requires careful consideration of which products make sense for such a program.

What’s in it for Amazon Sellers?

The free program promises several benefits:

  • Lower Return Fees: Reducing the number of physical returns could lead to savings on processing costs.
  • Happier Customers: The convenience of not having to return an item could enhance customer satisfaction and potentially lead to repeat business.
  • Time Savings: With fewer returns to manage, sellers might find more time to focus on other aspects of their business.

However, it's worth considering whether these advantages will truly outweigh the potential risks, such as increased opportunities for return abuse or the possibility of diminished product control.

Here are some quick pros and cons of returnless resolutions for FBA sellers:

Pros: Sellers can enhance customer satisfaction by eliminating the need for buyers to return unwanted items, which can lead to increased sales and repeat business. This process also saves sellers on logistics and restocking costs, allowing them to allocate resources more efficiently.

Cons: Sellers face potential revenue loss due to the inability to recoup products. There is also a risk of receiving negative feedback without having the opportunity to address issues directly with buyers, which could harm their reputation. Additionally, the lack of direct communication can prevent sellers from gaining valuable feedback necessary for product improvement.

It’s also worth noting that there are limitations to returnless resolutions. Amazon considers the following items to be ineligible for this new program:

  • Dangerous goods (hazmat)
  • Recalled products
  • Gift cards
  • Heavy and bulky items
  • Items with an average sales price (ASP) greater than $75

How Will This Affect Return Rates?

One of the big questions on sellers’ minds is how FBA Returnless Resolutions will impact overall return rates and associated fees. If a product isn’t returned and isn’t processed, logically, it should be exempt from Amazon's high return processing fees.

Things aren’t always as simple as logic, however. In the past, Amazon has made adjustments to one algorithm without corresponding updates to others, leading unexpected outcomes for sellers. There’s a possibility that the high return processing fees could still be applied incorrectly, or that other unforeseen issues might arise as the program rolls out.

Sellers should monitor their return rates and fees closely after enrolling in the program to ensure that they are not being errantly charged for the alleged improvement.

Impact on Reimbursement Services

For sellers who currently use reimbursement services to recover costs on returned items, the introduction of FBA Returnless Resolutions might complicate things. With potentially fewer physical returns, the number of reimbursement claims could decrease, which might seem like a positive shift.

However, in some cases, traditional returns and reimbursements might still be the more effective route for some products, especially for higher-value products where physical returns remain necessary.

Other Updates and Considerations

Amazon is also introducing FBA Grade and Resell alongside this program, which could help sellers recover some value from returned items.

The program grades eligible returns and, if possible, relists them for sale. While this might mitigate some losses, it’s not without its limitations and may not fully compensate for the challenges posed by returnless resolutions.

The Bottom Line

The FBA Returnless Resolutions program could mark a significant change in how returns are managed on Amazon. While it offers potential benefits in terms of cost savings and customer satisfaction, there are also potential drawbacks that sellers need to consider. As with any new program, the key will be to test, analyze, and adapt strategies accordingly to ensure that it truly serves the best interests of the business.

Sellers are encouraged to explore all of the details on the FBA Returnless Resolutions page on Seller Central and determine whether this program aligns with their operational goals. As always, staying informed and cautious when implementing new tools will be essential to maintaining a successful and sustainable business on Amazon.
